Shamatha Meditation

Develop the most calm and stable mind and become a certified teacher
with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche

Online Live

Starts 2 April 2022

Join the only planned teacher training with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche!

About the Program

Shiné is one of the deepest Tibetan meditation techniques. It is the most profound mindfulness, the most calm and stable mind - and allows you to practice on a completely different level. When the mind is truly calm, we are capable of incredible things. We can concentrate completely - without any tension, without any distraction from all the millions of thoughts and emotions we are experiencing at the moment.
Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche, together with his assistant, the experienced coach and educator Maaike Decock, has developed a very comprehensive six-month-program which combines the great knowledge, wisdom and purity of the ancient Tibetan roots with modern, Western education systems. Rinpoche will teach you the whole structure of Shiné, combined with direct personal practice. This program is a great and unique chance to learn directly from a true master of Tibetan Buddhism - and integrate Shiné in your daily life.

Rinpoche himself will show you step by step the path in this meditation process - from the overcrowded monkey mind to profound calmness and true mindfulness. During the course you can discuss your experiences and doubts in small groups and will receive support from experienced Shiné-tutors. You will build up step by step your own daily practice, experience the calmness, the amazing concentration skills and learn how to overcome all obstacles in this transformational process.
The acquired mental focus and calmness will help you in your daily life, in all your practices and is the foundation of all meditation.

Once you finish this program you are fully ready to teach others, to guide them and to truly help them to progress on their spiritual path and to develop more happiness in their daily life.

The content of the program

During six days of online live teachings, Tulku Lobsang will transmit to you his knowledge and experience in Shiné. Rinpoche will guide you step by step in the meditation and teach you all the important points – from the first step, where the mind is still crowded and full of thoughts, to meditative equipoise. You will learn which are the obstacles on this path and what can be done to overcome them.

All teachings will be held via Zoom.

This duration allows you to truly practice and experience Shiné and to understand what it really is. As important as the teaching days are the periods in between. You will follow your own schedule of daily meditations and also meet up online with your peer group members in order to discuss and practice with them together and to share your experiences.

You are guided and you guide yourself. You make your own experiences, questions arise and you discover many things to reflect upon. Six months are enough time to ask, to experience, to reflect and as a consequence to understand on deeper and deeper levels the detailed map of Shiné and what Shiné really is. This gives you not only knowledge – but also real understanding and first-hand experience and therefore the wisdom and capacity to teach.

During the teaching days, Rinpoche will guide you through meditations and teach you step by step how to calm your mind and reach Shiné. This way you experience yourself the different steps on the Shiné path. This will help you tremendously on your own spiritual path and later on in guiding your students and understanding their obstacles.

A peer group consists of four people and is assigned to you at the beginning of the Program. We will try our best to assign the groups based on language but we cannot guarantee that you will be assigned to a group in your own language.

Peer group meetings offer the opportunity to practice together, to guide each other in meditation,  to discuss doubts and experiences and to help each other.

You will receive the contact data of your peer group members and we will share your contact information with them. The four of you then individually arrange your online meeting times whenever they are most convenient for your group.

Plus: Your peer group will be given two dates for a personal online meeting with your tutor.

An experienced Shiné-teacher (tutor) will accompany you during the whole program. 6 peer groups (in total 24 people) will be assigned to one tutor group.

Your tutor will offer:

  • five Zoom-meetings of 1 hour (one each in between the teaching days) with the tutor group of 24 participants for debate and experience exchange.
  • two Zoom-meetings of 20 minutes for your personal peer group of four people to discuss and clarify questions on an even deeper and more intimate level.

Attending these meetings is not mandatory. The individual dates will be made available at the beginning of the Education once we have been able to assign you to your peer group and your tutor. We will try our best to assign you to a tutor who speaks your language – but we cannot guarantee it.

You will easily learn how to really calm your mind with our step by step schedule for your personal daily meditation.
You will gradually deepen your meditation, starting off with short sessions of five minutes.
The meditation schedule is divided into cycles of at least 21 days, with the duration of the sessions being slowly increased with each cycle.

21 days is a very important timeframe, because it takes this amount of time to release obstacles that come up.

In Tibetan Buddhism it is said: if you really want to learn deeply, you need to learn on different levels.

For this reason this program is designed that you will learn on the following levels:

  • Explanations help you to fully and clearly understand on a mostly intellectual level.
    • One part is hearing the teachings, listening to Rinpoche’s words.
    • One part is reflection. This will be done in the form of breakout rooms during the teaching days, in the peer groups and with the tutors.
  • Trying out means you practice yourself; you meditate and receive the first glimpse of the true meaning of Shiné, of the deepest mindfulness.
  • Experiencing goes beyond explanations and simply trying out. You will truly experience all 32 points of the Shiné-map. Thanks to this experience you will understand every one of these steps on a deep level and not only the words. You will know for example what subtle laxity is and not confuse it any longer with a calm mind. The highest experience we want to reach in this education is the most stable mind – the most profound mindfulness.
  • Teaching is the best way to learn. Guiding others is an essential expertise for a Shiné teacher and at the same time it helps you in your own learning process. As you will be trained to become a Shiné teacher, you will of course also gain experience in guiding others in their meditation. This will be done within your peer group.

At the end of this education you will not only fully understand, you will not only have tried it out, but you will have gained some level of experience of the most profound mindfulness of Shiné.

You will receive an extensive and detailed Shiné teacher manual.

The manual includes:

  • The phenomena called “mind”, its qualities and dimensions.
  • Meditation in Tibetan Buddhism, its goal and its benefits.
  • What is Mindfulness?
  • Preliminary practices.
  • A complete map of Shiné, including the 32 Shiné navigation points (the five faults, the eight antidotes, the six powers, the four mental engagements and the nine stages of calm-abiding).
  • Support before beginning a Shiné practice.
  • The complete practice.
  • Practice guidelines, including a personal Shiné schedule and how to deal with obstacles.
  • How to teach Shiné.
  • How to organise a course.
  • Recommended reading.

The largest part of the homework is your own personal daily meditation. We will provide you with very clear instructions. You start with meditation sessions of five minutes. Slowly these sessions are extended, up to 45 minutes a day.

The second part of the homework contains self-reflection and studying the teacher manual.

Another part is to get together online with your peer group members for guided meditations and reflection.

In addition you are asked to create your personal Thangka – your personal picture of Shiné, accompanied by a written explanation (in A4 format). But don’t worry, you do not need to do this Thangka as a drawing if you don’t want to. It can be done as a powerpoint presentation or something equivalent. Creating your Thangka helps you to deepen your knowledge by illustrating your personal experience on the Shiné path. And it will show us your understanding of Shiné.

In order to be certified as a Shiné teacher, you need to successfully pass a final online exam at the end of the education.

After every teaching day there will be a small test: You will receive a link, where you can answer some questions online. This helps you to assess your own understanding and to find out where you still might need to dig deeper.

At the end of the program you will then take your final online exam – which at this point should be no problem anymore. We already wish you a lot of success!

And please do not worry: Even if you don’t pass the test, you always have another chance!

Starts 2 April 2022

From your crazy monkey mind to deep calmness and perfect concentration

Shiné is an amazing path – in this teacher training you will receive the perfect map of your mind and you will learn how to tame it and to make it fully functional. You will understand which are the nine stages of calm-abiding, from “setting the mind” to “setting the mind in equipoise”, and which are the obstacles that you – just like everybody else – encounter on this path. And of course you will learn the antidotes that you can use to overcome those obstacles.

As symbolically presented on this traditional Thangka – with the monk representing the meditator, the elephant representing the mind, the monkey representing distractions , the rabbit representing subtle mental laxity and the rope representing the power of mindfulness – you will walk the Shiné path step by step until you find true calmness and deep concentration. Until you can abide in Shiné.

You have questions?

Shiné is the Tibetan word for Shamatha, which is the deepest calmness of our mind.
What generally is taught as mindfulness in the West is a very good method to develop awareness and to relax our mind on a general level. In Tibetan Buddhism this is just the first step, called “General Mindfulness”.
However, if we really want to go deeper, then we need Shiné – the highest form of mindfulness. Participation in this education will change your life and lead to a completely different understanding of your mind. You will learn in detail about the path to calm your mind and how to find full, effortless concentration as well as inner peace and happiness.
Once you have successfully mastered your mind with Shiné, you will be able to fully concentrate for a long time – without your mind wandering or being distracted by thoughts and emotions, and without feeling any sense of tension or stress. You will not only have the perfect map and deep understanding of your own mind – but you will also have the capability to help others to find Shiné and to live an easier, happier and more stable life.

We are sorry but we cannot provide any translation. Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche speaks an easy English. If you want to find out if your English skills are sufficient to follow Rinpoche’s teachings, please watch Tulku-la’s video about Shiné on this site.

We will try to assign you a peer group in your language to make it easier for you to discuss and learn together. If possible, we will also assign you a tutor in your language.

Yes, to become a certified Shiné teacher you need to attend all live teachings in order to receive all the teachings, guidance and meditations we are offering.

In case of sickness, please inform us in time that you are sick and therefore not able to attend a session. We will then try to find a way that you can catch up on  the content you missed. However, we will not provide recordings of the teaching days.

In total there are six live teaching days – always from 10:00 to 16:00 CEST (Vienna time)

Dates:
02.04.2022 (Sat.)
23.04.2022 (Sat.)
13.05.2022 (Fri.)
04.06.2022 (Sat.)
24.06.2022 (Fri.)
16.09.2022 (Fri.)

No, we will not provide any recordings.

Why?
Being fully present during the live teachings increases the value of the teachings for you as it makes sure that you attend with full attention. And that’s the best form to learn.
Knowing that you can watch something over and over again, does not help you to focus and be fully present.

Don’t worry – you do not need any artistic skills, nor make a perfect drawing. The Thangka can be done by hand but also with powerpoint or any other program.
Creating your Thangka helps you to deepen your knowledge by illustrating your personal experience on the Shiné path

Shiné is the Tibetan word for Shamatha, which is the deepest calmness of your mind. What generally is taught as mindfulness in the West, is a very good method to become aware and to relax our mind on a general level.  In Tibetan Buddhism this is just the first step, which is called “General Mindfulness”.

If we really want to go deeper, then we need Shiné – the highest form of mindfulness. Participating in this education will change your life and lead to a completely different understanding of your mind. You will get to know the path to calm your mind, to find full effortless concentration as well as peace and happiness.

Once you have successfully mastered your mind with the method of Shiné, you will be able to fully concentrate for a long time – without your mind wandering or being distracted by thoughts and emotions. Without feeling any sense of tension or stress. And you will not only have the perfect map and deep understanding of your own mind – but you will also have the capability to help others develop Shiné and live an easier, happier and more stable life.

If you already attended a mindfulness retreat with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche: This program is designed in a completely different way than any prior mindfulness retreats with Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche. Thanks to its length and very thoroughly designed structure, you will not only receive an overview of all the 32 important points of Shiné, of your mind and how to tame it – but you will also gain true insight thanks to the step by step path which leads you deeply into your own experience. You will understand your mind far more profoundly as after a retreat of one or two weeks.

One example:

Let’s think of the faults, or obstacles, and the antidotes to overcome them. Let’s take the first fault, the fault of laziness. We all have a concept of what laziness is. But we don’t know the subtle levels of laziness. We might have some idea – but still on a very conceptional level. Maybe we remember what is a good antidote for laziness. But do you really know how to use this antidote and what it really is?

This education is – thanks to its design – giving you more than simple knowledge of the Shiné map. You will experience every part of the map. Through your meditation practice, by going slowly, step by step. And as you experience it – you are ready to ask, to discuss, to reflect. And then to understand also on a deep level what is meant with every word.

Then you are the perfect teacher – you can guide yourself on your own path, in your daily life. And you can of course guide others. Then you can use their language, the words they need to be taken out of their concepts, and not simply the manual.

This makes a huge difference.

Please prepare the following:

  • Smooth, black, roundish meditation object:
    • Material: stone (not too shiny)
    • Diameter: approx. 3 to 5 centimeters
    • Ideal shape: round on the top and flat at the bottom so that it can lay flat on a surface
  • Very comfortable, large meditation cushion (height of at least 4 fingers-width)

  • Additional small pillow that can be rolled up

  • Sleeping mask (to blindfold your eyes)

Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche

Tulku Lobsang is a high Buddhist master and teacher who was born in Amdo, north-eastern Tibet. At the age of six, Rinpoche entered the local Buddhist monastery school and when he was eleven years old, he transferred to the Nangzi Monastery, the largest Bon monastery in Tibet. At that time the monks of the Sowa monastery were looking for the reincarnation of their lama. At the age of 13, Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche was recognized as the 8th reincarnation of the Nyentse Lama.

The young Rinpoche then received formal teachings in different monasteries and deepened his knowledge in Sutra, Medicine and Astrology. In addition to his general schooling, a line of highly respected scholars taught Tulku-la privately, instructed him in the teaching of Tantra and gave him empowerments and initiations in all eight lineages. Rinpoche remains a practitioner of all eight lineages.

In 1993, at the age of 17, Rinpoche left Tibet for South India to deepen and complete his studies in the Gaden Shartse Monastery. After five years Tulku-la moved to Dharamsala to pass the Tibetan cultural heritage on to both Tibetans and Westerners.

Since the year 2000, Rinpoche has been traveling through Europe, America and Asia sharing his deep knowledge in order to reduce suffering in the world. Tulku-la bases his teachings on the ancient knowledge of Tantrayana, which is the foundation of both Tibetan Buddhism and Tibetan Medicine. Rinpoche bridges worlds and translates the ancient wisdom of his venerable transmission lineage into practical advice for the present day.

Sharing a Warm Heart

For each participant in this program we will donate three percent of the registration fee to the Nying Drod-Warm Heart project.

Nying Drod was founded by Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche and builds a bridge between continents – it connects those who want to give with those who need help. Every Nying Drod donation will be used directly to improve the living conditions of Tibetans. The Nying Drod – Warm Heart project supports Tibetans in need. It finances the education of children, contributes to the medical care of the sick or elderly and supports monks in Tibetan monasteries.
